LEAP kicks off W.O.W. Program

Farmington: (January 23, 2012)
LEAP (Life Enrichment Advancing People) Inc. kicked off its second annual W.O.W. Program on January 9 th at the Fairbanks Meeting House. Working On Wellness or W.O.W. is a wellness initiative to support people receiving services, employees, and their families to make healthy lifestyle changes. The program also offers opportunities to try new activities to promote physical and emotional wellbeing. More then 50 participants have signed up to be part of this year’s program and a total of 68.6 lbs was shed in the first week! Some of the scheduled events for the next 12 weeks are: Lunch and Learns, Yoga, Sweating to the Oldies, Belly Dancing, Game Nights, Bowling, Snowshoeing, Volleyball, Basketball, Well Walks and a Healthy Recipe Swap just to name a few.

This program takes many people to make it a success. W.O.W. Leaders have been identified to lead activities and help to weigh in the participants each week. A huge thank you goes out to the leaders this year for their dedication and energy they have volunteered thus far: Sarah Ellis, Ashley Wentworth, Brooke Lewis and Ronnie West. Other wellness champions are: Kim Fronk, Judy Wilde, Dustin Savage, Kristi Iverson, Cinder Savage, Megan Goodine, Darryl Wood, Carlene Wilbur, Lisa Hill, Stacy Dill and Tony Bolens.

Although this is only the second year of W.O.W., LEAP has been offering wellness opportunities since 2006 in partnership with the Muskie Center and the Healthy Community Coalition. The agency is committed to providing education and activities to encourage employees and supported individuals to make healthier choices.

LEAP is a Farmington based private nonprofit agency, which has been providing community and residential supports for people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities and their families in Western and Central Maine for over 30 years.
